Noel is a Genius

Lauren's comment on my last post reveals she's a good sleuth, and it's worth confessing in a real post: we're going with cloth diapers, having ordered our supply of Bumgenius 2.0 just the other day. They're en route (well, minus the butternut color, which is on backorder and will come in a couple weeks). Woot!

So far, we're convinced that that these cloths are as easy as disposables: an extra load of wash per day (depending on how many you buy, but Tracey Carrin reports this only means $2 more per month on the water bill) but no trash (which suits our recycling pinko-commie selves), and way cheaper (these one-size-fits-all diapers aren't much bulkier than disposables right now, but they get sleeker as he gets bigger, and they should last until he weighs 35 pounds).

We'll let you know if we do or don't stay so rosy about them, but so far we're pumped. . . .

Yes, an update . . . we love them.

The colors are fabulous, they're super easy, and they suit our greenness very well.

A note on the easiness: we bought the pocket diapers, which means they're basically an outer component with an insert, so we separate those two when we put the dirty diapers in the pail (that way, we basically just dump the pail into the washing machine and don't have to separate later).

And a word of comparison with disposables--yes, they're a little bulkier (onesies that would easily fit over a disposable are super tight in the bum region when he's wearing a Bumgenius), but they're as easy (the Bumgenius operates basically like a disposable, with stretch tabs). So, if you have prestuffed the insert, you grab a new one and put it on just like a disposable.

And they're just as absorbent so far (other Bumgenius users say they'll remain this way). Sometimes Noel will sleep long periods during the day, but he's only leaked out of a Bumgenius once, but he'd have done the same out of a disposable (because of the nature of the, uh, leak, if you know what I mean). That is, he hasn't leaked out of cloth any more than he has out of disposables.

So, highly recommendable. We're about a week in so far--cloth diapers (mostly Bumgenius, with one Fuzzibunz too) and cloth wipes too. Loving it.

I think our little sweathog gets them wet through sweat as well. Not sure, just a theory, but they are much larger and cotton. When he gets bigger and they expand this won't be a problem (if it really is sweat now).
